A spectacular new image of the Sculptor Galaxy (NGC 253) has been taken with the ESO VISTA telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile as part of one of its first major observational campaigns. By observing in infrared light VISTA’s view is less affected by dust and reveals a myriad of cooler stars as well as a prominent bar of stars across the central region. The VISTA image provides much new information on the history and development of the galaxy.

The Sculptor Galaxy (NGC 253)

lies in the constellation of the same name and is one of the brightest galaxies in the sky. It is prominent enough to be seen with good binoculars and was discovered by Caroline Herschel from England in 1783. NGC 253 is a spiral galaxy that lies about 13 million light-years away. It is the brightest member of a small collection of galaxies called the Sculptor Group, one of the closest such groupings to our own Local Group of galaxies. Part of its visual prominence comes from its status as a starburst galaxy, one in the throes of rapid star formation. NGC 253 is also very dusty, which obscures the view of many parts of the galaxy (eso0902). Seen from Earth, the galaxy is almost edge on, with the spiral arms clearly visible in the outer parts, along with a bright core at its centre.

And There is Monty Python:

The Galaxy Song By Monty Pythons Flying Circus

Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown
And things seem hard or tough
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft
And you feel that you’ve had quite eno-o-o-o-o-ough

Just remember that you’re standing on a planet that’s evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour
That’s orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it’s reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power
The sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour
Of the galaxy we call the Milky Way

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars
It’s a hundred thousand light-years side to side
It bulges in the middle sixteen thousand light-years thick
But out by us it’s just three thousand light-years wide
We’re thirty thousand light-years from Galactic Central Point
We go ’round every two hundred million years
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whiz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know
Twelve million miles a minute and that’s the fastest speed thereis

So remember when you’re feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely is your birth
And pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere up in space
‘Cause there’s bugger all down here on Earth

The idea behind citizen journalism is that people without professional journalism training can use the tools of modern technology and the global distribution of the Internet to create, augment or fact-check media on their own or in collaboration with others. For example, you might write about a city council meeting on your blog or in an online forum. Or you could fact-check a newspaper article from the mainstream media and point out factual errors or bias on your blog. Or you might snap a digital photo of a newsworthy event happening in your town and post it online.

Wikipedia Says :

A chamber of commerce (also referred to in some circles as a board of trade) is a form of business network, e.g., a local organization of businesses whose goal is to further the interests of businesses. Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the business community. Local businesses are members, and they elect a board of directors or executive council to set policy for the chamber.

A Brief yet Succinct History of The Internet

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    From : http://www.irishgaelictranslator.com/translation/topic99399.html

The news that 150-200 jobs are to go at the Covidien factory in Tullamore, Co Offaly, has come as an immense shock to local people.
It is the second major jobs blow to the town in as many years, following the closure of the Boston Scientific factory, also located in the Sragh Industrial Estate. Sadly, some of the Covidien staff had got work there after the closure of Boston Scientific.
There is widespread local concern that even during the boom years, the town did not receive its share of industrial investment. Covidien, formerly Tyco, has been based in Tullamore for 28 years, and is the town’s largest employer, making medical devices.
The planned voluntary redundancies mean that almost one-third of the 650 jobs will be lost.
The blow to the local economy is all the greater as there are many families where both partners work in Covidien.
Local businessman Dominic Doheny, who heads the Midland Gateway Chamber of Commerce, representing Athlone, Tullamore and Mullingar, has said that despite the fact that Tullamore is in the constituency of Taoiseach Brian Cowen, it has not gained in terms of jobs, and he makes the point that the Taoiseach is inevitably focused on the national economic crisis, and cannot give the same attention to the constituency as he did during the boom years.

The Irish Times Reports : http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0526/breaking26.html

Close to 200 jobs have been lost at a medical devices manufacturing plant in Co Offaly, it has been confirmed.

Management at the healthcare group Covidien, which is the biggest employer in Tullamore, met unions and staff this afternoon to confirm the job losses.

A spokeswoman for Covidien said a 160 full-time positions would go through an early retirement and voluntary redundancies programme. A further 39 temporary jobs will also be lost over the next few weeks.

She said the decision to cut jobs was linked to declining sales and increased competition from low cost manufacturers for the medical supplies products manufactured in Tullamore. She added that it had exhausted all other actions before announcing the job losses.

Covidien employs 650 people in Tullamore, part of a 42,000-strong global workforce. The Dublin-headquartered company also has operation in Galway and Athlone. It has operated in Ireland for nearly 30 years.

A number of cost cutting measures were recently introduced at the plant, including the loss of overtime and new shift arrangements. However, Siptu branch organiser Frank Jones said that employees were shocked by today’s news.

“There’s a lot of shock because it came out this morning that there was going to be an announcement and that was the first we had really heard about it. We have been engaging with management as recently as last Friday when there was a meeting and we weren’t told anything then. It was only when the news broke through the media that we became aware that job losses were a possibility,” he said.

“This is a devastating because Covidien is the biggest employer in the town and so we’re all in shock, “he added.

Mr Jones told The Irish Times consultations between unions and management would begin tomorrow.

“Management have told us they envisage people exiting the company by early September so the job losses will be taking effect fairly shortly,” he said. “There’s every hope that jobs can be saved and that’s what we’ll be focusing on in our talks with management. Our priority is to get the number of losses down to as low as we can.”

Mr Jones said full-time workers are expected to secure a severance package of six weeks pay for every year of service plus the statutory two weeks entitlement.

The New-York listed healthcare group completed the transfer of its place of incorporation from Bermuda to Dublin in June 2009. The company, which is an offshoot of Tyco International, had signalled the move two months earlier when the incoming Obama administration introduced a clampdown on tax havens.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Covidien said it would continue to be a major employer in Tullamore.

“The company has made significant investments to automate key product lines to competitively position the plant for the future. A further investment of approximately €3 million is planned for this year,” it said.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen described the losses as “deeply regrettable”.

Mr Cowen said he has spoken to the company’s CEO who assured him that Covidien remain committed to Tullamore.

“The fact is that this industry cannot escape the global downturn…competition from firms based in low cost countries mean that Covidien will not see a return to previous sales volumes.

“This decline in product volume meant that difficult decisions about scaling down the workforce were necessary to help secure the remaining 450 jobs in Tullamore,” he said.

Fine Gael said the IDA must conduct a thorough examination of Covidien’s competitiveness problems in order to secure the future of the company in Tullamore.

Most of Tullamore’s large employers have now been wiped out in just a few years. I am deeply disappointed that Covidien, through these redundancies, now joins the list of companies that have laid off huge numbers of staff. It’s extraordinary that the town’s employment base could be hollowed out in this manner,” said Olwyn Enright, Fine Gael TD for Laois-Offaly.

The Labour Party described the job losses as “a bitter blow” for the local community.

    What is European SME Week?

(Click For Main Site) European SME Week 2010, which will take place from 25 May to 1 June, aims to:

    - provide information on what the EU and national, regional and local authorities are offering as support to micro, small and medium-sized businesses;
    - promote entrepreneurship so that more people, and in particular younger ones, seriously consider becoming an entrepreneur as a career option;
    - give recognition to entrepreneurs for their contribution to Europe’s welfare, jobs, innovation and competitiveness.

    Here is An Inspiring Video:

Launched in 2009, the European SME Week is coordinated by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry as one of the measures implementing Principle 1 of the Small Business Act for Europe (SBA) , which states that “the EU and Member States should create an environment within which entrepreneurs and family businesses can thrive and entrepreneurship is rewarded”.

European SME Week 2010 is a pan-European campaign taking place in 37 participating countries, which is however fully decentralised in order for events and activities to take place as close as possible to the established and potential entrepreneurs themselves. Events will be organised at national, regional or local level by business organisations, business support providers, as well as by national, regional and local authorities in the participating countries. These events should also be an opportunity for existing SMEs to share their experiences and to further develop their businesses.

    The Bog of Allen

    Posted on May 27, 2010

    From Wikipedia :

The Bog of Allen (Móin Alúine in Irish) is a large peat bog in the centre of Ireland between the rivers Liffey and Shannon. The Irish Peatland Conservation Council describes the bog as “an important area of peatland, as much a part of Irish natural heritage as the Book of Kells.”[1] The bog, however, is in danger now after centuries of agricultural exploitation and recent encroachments by development.[citation needed] Efforts are underway to save the bog and preserve its fragile ecological state. The bog’s 958 square kilometers (370 square miles) stretch into County Offaly, County Meath, County Kildare, County Laois, and County Westmeath.[2] Peat is mechanically harvested on a large scale by Bórd na Móna,[citation needed] the government-owned peat production industry. The area has miles of narrow gauge industrial railways for transporting turf to processing plants and turf powered power plants. In addition, the cutover portions are used as area for grazing. The bog is crossed by the Grand Canal and the Royal Canal (this section of the Royal is no longer used)
